SURREAL BLACK CLOSED ON AUGUST 16, 2022
With the increasing prevalence of movements such as ‘Black Lives Matter’, the issue and discussion surrounding issues affecting the black race continue to echo and ring out internationally. The notions of injustice, brutality, misrepresentation, stereotyping and misinterpretation continue to be experienced and entrenched in the lives of black people over centuries. The black body is one that has been distorted and stereotyped since colonization.
As key features are over enhanced and sexualized to suit the narratives that have been created. The National Gallery West seeks to explore the diversity of interpretation and challenges to the stereotyping of the black body through its exhibition titled “SURREAL BLACK”.
The exhibition is meant to cause introspection and discussion and arouse reconsiderations to the depictions of the black body in our neo colonial society.
The work of these artists featured in the exhibition are not static but are open to interpretation and encourages thoughtful discussion as we seek to reimagine the black body and break stereotypes that have been enthroned for decades.
The artists featured in this exhibition include:
- Omari Ra
- Osmond Watson
- Carl Abrahams
- Mallica ‘Kapo’ Reynolds
- Colin Garland
- David Boxer
- Leonard Daley
- William ‘Woody’ Josephs
- Marvin Bartley
- Christopher Gonzales
