JAMAICAN HERBS

Jamaica is not only known for the sand, sea and sand, but also numerous herbs that are grown all over this beautiful island and these herbs are  known for their medicinal properties. 

 

ORANGE PEEL 

While some people do not pay attention to the orange skin once it has been peeled, there are great healing properties in what many households consider “garbage”. When boiled in water as tea, it can be used for stomach ailments, lower blood pressure, suppressing anxiety/depression, improves heart health, lowers bad cholesterol and eases respiratory issues. 

 

ALOE VERA “SINKLE BIBLE”

Aloe Vera plant is very popular in Jamaica and can be found in the yards of many Jamaican households. The Aloe Vera plant is vital for the external and internal body. Externally the aloe vera plant is useful in treating acne, sunburns, assists in the healing process of wounds and also used as a hair growth remedy. Internally it is good for lowering blood sugar/heartburn and detoxing the body. The Aloe Vera plant is also consumed by being incorporated in daily smoothies and juices.

 

DANDELION

 Dandelions are not just weeds that need to be pulled up or moved down. Instead they are used for their medicinal properties. The herb is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It can be used as a cleanser to treat skin problems such as acne, eczema etc. It can also be used to treat jaundice and also protects the bladder, kidney and liver from disease.
Once washed properly, it can be used to make incredible, delicious tea that can help to promote a healthier life. 

 

SOURSOP LEAVES

The soursop tree produces a toasty fruit that is loved by many Jamaicans. However, the leaf itself is very fundamental and filled with many healing properties. The leaves are used to make tea, and is a good remedy for several ailments such as diabetes, nerve problems, insomnia, high blood pressure and kidney problems. 

 

FEVER GRASS

Fever grass was given its name because of his ability to recover from high fever. Also known as lemongrass, the leaf when boiled and made into tea can be used to treat cold and flus. Its anti-inflammatory properties are ideal in reducing cholesterol and providing kidney protection.  The tea also aids in relieving headaches, stomach and urinary problems. 

 

CERASSEE

Cerassee which is one of the most popular medicinal herbs in Jamaica is also referred to as “bitter medicine”. This tea is had by many Jamaicans is extremely beneficial and is used by many as treatment for varying ailments. It used to treat colds/flus and also stomach bugs and ailments. It detoxifies the body and gets rid of toxins and other parasitic worms in the stomach. It also flushes  the kidney and liver and therefore aids in controlling diabetes, skin conditions, nerve problems and even menstrual cramps. 

Jamaicans are known to ‘tek dem hand mek fashion’ and this is even seen in the use of these herbs to treat varying diseases and sicknesses. It’s important however to speak with your physician before using any of these herbs as single treatment options.
