THE National Gallery West, the Montego Bay branch of the National Gallery of Jamaica, last Sunday, launched its latest exhibition, I Shall Return Again, at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre in the resort city.
This exhibition explores the work of five young Jamaican artists: Monique Gilpin, Leasho Johnson, Cosmo Whyte, Nile Saulter and his brother Storm Saulter, who have been making an impact on the local and international art scenes. All five artists hail from western Jamaica.
Inspired by the Claude McKay poem, I Shall Return, which eloquently embodies the creative impulse being influenced by a separation from home and the almost overwhelming longing to return, the exhibition looks at the ways in which the artists’ work have been influenced by their experiences of “home” and also their time spent living, working and creating away from the distinctive culture of the tourist-centric north and north-west coasts of Jamaica.
I Shall Return Again, which features many new and recent paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and film, continues until November.
